Benefits of Learning

Linda Harris is an Education Projects Manager working in the Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) Project Team at NHS Education for Scotland.  Drawing upon her experience of working with clinical HCSW projects across NHSScotland, Linda shares her observations of the impact of education for HCSWs, the patients they care for, and the teams they are part of.

Becoming engaged in learning to support HCSW role development has many benefits.  HCSW's often develop greater confidence which leads to taking on more tasks more independently.  Registered practitioners also seem to develop confidence in HCSW's skills and can delegate routine tasks, freeing them up to spend more time on complex patient care and treatment.

An unexpected benefit is that when enthusiasm for learning is experienced by HCSWs it often has a positive effect on others and spreads across the whole team.
